THE LEMON TECHNIQUE
Visualisation
Imagine you are eating a sharp juicy lemon, or a pickled onion . . . is your mouth watering?
The response to the thought is a physical one. I call this the ‘lemon’ technique and I have been promoting it in my yoga classes.
If we are unable to use a particular part of the body (i.e) we have a frozen shoulder or a painful hip, there is no reason why we can’t visualise that we are also working that side of the body to create balance, rather than over working our ‘good’ side. If you can imagine you are performing the action in your minds eye, you will benefit physically and mentally.
If we have performed the movements before the injury or limiting condition the overall benefits are increased. As we will have residual muscle memory from our past experience of the movement. Consistency is the key, the more you practice your visualisation, the easier it will become. Try it and it could become a reliable too to help you overcome any physical challenges that you are working with.
It is known that marathon runners use visualisations to help the mind and body, as running is both a physical and mental challenge . A visualisation similar to our ‘lemon’ technique can make all the difference.
